A Poem: Kindness and Caring

To be kind and to care
Is a gift I try to share,
It is difficult at times
To forgive others of their crimes.

My heart is big, brimming with love,
I come in peace, I fly the white dove,
I choose to be kind and nice
To both men and mice.

Some mistake my kindness
To be a great weakness,
Some think my sharing
Is something so daring.

These are my choices
To stand up for unheard voices,
This is who I am,
I wash myself in the blood of the lamb.

There is a joy in giving,
Service is the purpose for us living,
People fear giving,
For they often fear living.

Sometimes we become selfish
After being hurt by those who are devilish,
We close the doors to our heart
Keeping us apart.

There are those who take advantage of my kindness,
Often rendering in my mind and heart a huge mess,
I hope they learn and grow someday
Or else I fear their future is dark and grey.

Letting go of our egos
Loving our foes,
Are what religious books preach
For some these goals are so hard to reach.

I warn those who hurt me,
That I will give them a chance or will let them just be,
Cutting all ties,
I will not deal with lies.

I do not have swords or guns
And about me and my heart you may make fun,
I may be struck down,
But on my face you will never find a frown.

I'm not perfect, for I do falter,
But my shortcomings I always try and alter,
I try hard to keep my word,
I try to not let my anger be spurred.

My strength lies in my heart,
Which is wide as an ocean, and warm as a hearth,
My strength lies in my mind,
I realize to be sharing, caring and kind.

The Wall - Jon's Lament

"You know nothing, Jon Snow." Yigrette
She would tell me many a time,
Then she betrayed me like I would never forget,
She did what she knew, I forgive her of her crime.

The wall it stands there,
Looming,
Just thick ice reflecting the sun's glare,
Throughout the North, where it is forever gloaming.

Shall we place the wall between us?
With you on the cold side
Me on the South side
It freezes our love and trust.

I was always true,
To my black brothers and to you.
Then there was that moment,
When I had to choose, and it was sealed in cmement.

I chose to forgive,
I chose mercy and honor,
For the old man to live,
We had him in a corner...

You killed the old man,
For what? He begged for mercy.
Then you shot me in the leg, woman!
I know all women are crazy...

You know nothing Jon Snow!
That's all you said,
South of the wall I knew all there is to know,
I loved you for more than just to take you to bed.

I knew we could have had a different life,
We could have started afresh,
Without sticking the man with the knife,
You went ahead and created a mess.

I know you would blame me,
Saying "you know nothing, Jon Snow",
I am not as naive as I seem to be,
You just didn't see the entirety of the show.

Now you are gone,
I shall miss you,
Remembering always all that was done,
However, everyday is begins anew.

For Jon Snow, of the Night's Watch, on the Wall...

Reject

Have you ever felt lonely in a crowded room
Everyone's laughing, talking, mingling,
The room is bright and yet you see only gloom
And in your ear the endless silence ringing.

Have you ever felt left out
Of a circle of smiling friends,
As they make plans without a doubt
Not inviting you, not even an apology to make amends.

Have you ever felt not good enough
Like you were not pretty, thin, or buff
That your friendship didn't count
They only wanted someone they could flaunt.

Have you ever felt hurt
More painful than the deepest cut,
When someone you love pushes you away
Even though they will need you once again, some day.

Have you ever felt abandoned
Not loved or cared for, instead only scorned,
Forgotten in lieu
Of someone new.

Have you ever felt replaced
When they replace you with another face,
What did your friendship mean
Or was this the worst yet to be seen.

Have you ever felt betrayed
Like what happened to Robb and Catelyn, at the hands of the Freys,
To be treated as family only to be stabbed in the back
Those types of people aren't worth jack.

Have you ever felt rejected
Like your own father won't accept you
Like Tyrion his who life, dejected,
Discriminated like a diseased ridden ewe.

It's good to know
These are just feelings
A chemical reaction that may pass.
It's sad to feel, however,
For these are people's feelings,
Of which we should be mindful of, or peace,
is the ultimate goal.

The Two Towers

Remembering...

As my heart breaks,
I feel the pain of thousands again.
Remembering the fear, the shock, the pain,
The anger, and all the emotion this day takes.

Remembering the lives lost,
The war it cost,
More lives were taken,
The whole world shaken.

Remembering the strenght of the masses,
Even though the two towers lay in ashes,
The city lived, and lives on,
The spirit will shine on forever, on and on.

Alien Ware and Mom

My mom texts me this morning:
Mom- is alien ware a computer? wat is alien ware?
me- alien ware is a type/ brand of computer
mom- why does it look like a briefcase?
me- cause it's a fancy computer!

Then it struck me! A little too late: I should have said "it was a new technology found by the Mars Rover, ancient alien technology. Nasa found it and only the Men in Black carry it and use it to spy on humans and aliens alike!" She would have fallen for it!

My beautiful mother (and handsome father)... isn't it funny when the time comes where you know more than your parents?

The Morbid, Morose and Macabre

Winter is Coming... with winter comes the long night especially in the north. Darkness, cold, oldness, shadows, illness and death. One never knows when that darkness will creep up on us. It's always there lurking, and sometimes the sunshine keeps it at bay, but even the sun can be dark. At times.

Recently, I witnessed the love of my life grow pale, and ill in the matter of minutes. He fell upon the floor retching, in pain. I was in a fright, my Ryan, helpless as much as I felt helpless. He recovered quickly a few hours and a day later. The darkness crept, but it was for someone else.

Monday afternoon, a day and a half later, my mother informed me via a text message that my great aunt (middle sister to my maternal grandmother) was in bad condition. I wrote about her in 2011, when I visited her during a business trip to Kolkata. What a woman she was before, how she suffered, and now she is gone. I should be happy she is free, but I mourn my own loss: who will cook for me? Who will make begun bhaja (fried eggplant) and roti (Indian bread) for me? Who will great me with excitement and a major hullabaloo?

I've never lost anyone so close, other than my doggies. Although she suffered seven years, this came as a shock. She was an amazing person, not a word of English but so warm at heart. She had no need or greed, but lived a simple satisfied life. People are what mattered. People and simple joys. Her cooking was exquisite, just like the rest on that side of the family. I can't imagine losing a sister. My sister spends time with my grandmom (dida) and she is shattered. Mejho Dida (my great aunt passed) proves that we are all we have... forget all the other useless material stuff on earth. We need to be good to each other, there for each other, we have time together and then we are gone. How will you spend your time? Are you grateful for the people in your life? The people who have touched your life? Say thanks now before they are gone. I wish I could have talked to her...

She was cremated last night, as the rains flooded the streets of Baranagar, Kolkata. It was a task, getting her to the crematorium, so I hear. For seven years she suffered, and now she was set free to peace, in the rains. Today it rains here so heavily. Does the earth reciprocate our tears? Wishful thinking, but rather blissful... the stormy sky looming, the thunder, the grey gloomy clouds blotching out the sun: it feeds this morose feeling. I add the Requiem Mass in D minor by W. Amadeus M. to breed the melancholy even further. To the tipping point, that I celebrate her life and death in the music, and weather nature has provided. I embrace it as a part of life. I relinquish my needs, my selfishness, and let go. I meditate upon it all: emotions, happenings, family, relationships, memories, illness, health, life and death.

Loss could happen, anytime to anyone anywhere. We can never protect ourselves from it. The impermanence of life: it is but as fleeting as a butterfly's beat of a wing. And we think they have short lives. Best we prepare ourselves earlier on, by remembering impermanence. Remembering to stay compassionate and loving, cherishing our bonds of attachments, that are impermanent, nevertheless remaining grateful.

The sweet baby birds do grow up to become cold blooded killers of innocent earth worms... then we reach the Sanctus: Benedictus and the Agnus Dei, and we see the glory, peace, mercy and acceptance. The sun peeps out. Life goes on. Learning to absorb, embrace and accept the macabre, the morbid aspects of life. The roses do wither and die. Breathe.

Sometimes, though, Breathing is just not enough.

So live!

and Breathe... mindfully so.

The storm approaches

some enjoy the rain

darkness falls

storms even engulf royal palaces

others are carried away by the rains...

Loss

On losing you, I feel such deep sadness, I can only sigh,
On realizing I will see you nevermore, I cry
But your face is ever clear in my mind's eye.

Your voice is ever clear in my ears,
Ringing shrilly through the tears,
Waking the neighbors, through the crowds, for all those years.

I saw you last, so pale and ill,
My heart shattered a thousand times over,
They kept feeding you pills to no avail. Only I could hear you wail.

Through the silence and the darkness, your eyes told all,
All you wanted was to be together again, not stuck in this form,
Now at least you are free,  I set you free, fly back to your love, fly back to me.

Parting is always such sweet sorrow,
It must be done some day, if not the morrow,
Letting go is something humans strive to learn, we always chose to mourn and mourn
                                                                                         till the next morn.

I love you dearly I must say,
Even if we couldn't share recent days,
My sweet memories of you will always linger on, and on and on...
and there you will live for me to cherish.

Trip to NYC in July

It was Thursday25th July night, and I realized as I looked at my friend Nikki's (AKA AT trail name Argo) pictures on her FB page, about how she had just crossed the Delaware Water Gap, on her journey through hiking the Appalachian Trail. I would be driving through the Delaware Water Gap on the 26th. IF only we had planned it better I might have met her at the Gap. I felt sad I wouldn't be able to meet up with her on the trail, since my time off from work is limited, and coordinating such a thing was difficult. I resigned and decided that I should accept this. It would be ok. Nikki would be fine, and she would still be my friend, my sister...

The next day, I decided to message her and send her some love because I had come to accept the reality. So I just sent her a message saying -  I love you Nikki Sis! She messaged me back - How is you summer my Indian Goddess! So I began to tell her some story, or the other, and said I wish I was hiking with her. From her reply I gathered many people were finding it hard to coordinate time to hike with her. We began planning future trips, and I happened to mention I was going to NYC that very day.

Me- going to NYC this weekend how far have u gone from the delaware gap?

Nikki-I'm in newyork... I can see the NYC skyline from where I am!
Lots of hikers taking buses into the city for a few days lol

Me-WHAT!
omg ill be in new york this weekend!
could we meet up?

At that moment I was called into a meeting. I was crunched for time to get work done, before I had to leave, and this meeting was over, but people tend to go over points over and over again. I had to leave work at 12:00 so I could go home and leave to pick up Ryan and head on our way to NYC. It's an 8 hour drive!
Finally when I got out of the meeting I see a missed call, a text message and another instant message all from Nikki.

Nikki- Lol um maybe... Are you staying with your sister?
Give me a call, I can take an hour and a half bus ride and I'd be there!
I can leave out of Warwick NY

Me-Nikki I was in a meeting!
YES!
We will be staying at my grandparent's place! Or there is also my sister's place!

Nikki- Lol omg would they let a hiker sleep on their floor?

Me- we're all going to sleep on the floor

my sis, me, ryan, my sis' fiance and my mom!
Nikki- Omg this is crazy
Should I ask your mom if this is ok lol

Me-my mom would LOVE to see you

Nikki- I can't stop giggling!
When are you guys getting there ?

Me- we would get there at 9pm tonight
but u cud get there before
you will love my grandmother

Nikki- Just called Paul and told him... He was like ' good luck' what are you going to do there... And I said eat amazing food and be with amazing people
...

We finally met, hugged, and there was giggles and tears all at once! We knew this trip was meant to be... Somehow things had worked out even though I had accepted the bitter truth... but it happened!!! I met her near the trail, and we hiked, explored, bonded and had fun. Not just Nikki and I but the whole lot of us. The three sisters, the mothers, the lovers, the friends...

What a whirlwind of a weekend we had! We met up with my sister, my sister took us to some cool places, Strawberry Fields, the Mind Tree, where we did a little yoga, Tomlin Square to listen to cool yoga teacher who played Rumba music in the park! We met a few more of her artist friends! Then we went to a cozy - cool bar which had grapes growing atop it and celebrated my sister's birthday. We met her wonderful friend Aric and took cool pictures. We had a wonderful dinner with our family, hit up a bar my uncle went to when he was in college. We even briefly met my cousins Atanu and Antara the next morning, and got a little bit of shopping in! Oh to experience the New York Minute with this crazy lot: Ryan, My sister and her Fiance the amazing artist Chris, My other sister Nikki, Aric, My mom, grandparents, my Uncle and his Girlfriend! Wow!

Memories of Younger Years with My Sister Dear

Today is my little sister's birthday. She isn't little anymore... but I do recall that I called her "Baby" for many a year. I switched between calling her Baby and Bontie through the years, until per chance, me and a close friend of ours began calling her Pig. This blog post is dedicated to my lovely sister - Piyali.

Dearest Bontie, Pig, Baby, Piyali...
I just want to wish you a happy birthday, but those are cliched words, I really wish you all the joy, love, success and laughter today, this year and forever! I love you so much, and I am so grateful to have you in my life for 28 years! Ok I think we didn't see each other between 2001 - 2002 but after that we have seen each other once every year. It's unhealthy and unnatural for us to be apart... we have some weird familial, historical dynamic... something from our childhood, genetic, and spiritual bonds us. We are telepathic and you know it!

28 years! we've fought, hugged, cried, grown, argued, silent treatment, tickled, giggled, pulled hairs, played, slept, ate, read, wandered and wondered, lost ourselves, found ourselves... we've been through so much, and here we are sharing stories and growing even more. Some memories of our childhood which only we know, secrets, gross stuff, sparkly stuff... locked away in our hearts. Playing with you was always so much fun - imagining castles, our flying horses, and our light sabers... what wonderful adventures we had together, what awesome world's we lived in. Running barefoot in school, playing at the jungle gym, waiting for our car together under the tree and observing those red-diamond bugs, the powder -puff tree, the tamarind tree, climbing the mango tree, Tennis with Raghu, then later with Sundar, Mrs. Menon's singing class, Hindi tuition with Motoraj! Bengali clas,s french, class, German, class, dance class, swimming class... I almost forgot the naughty things we did - put on ma's make up, clothes, and shoes, skipping class, feeding the dog our breakfast under the table, cuddling with the bunnies at night, sneaking and eating all the chocolate, our search for stick-em-stones, the war over the trolls, the "i'm-gonna-be" game...

I lead, being the older sister, and you followed. You always tagged along on my birthdays, and got gifts on my birthday! But strangely I never got gifts on your birthday, or was allowed to tag along. Some double standard! Anyway, I remember approving of your crushes, and was always wondering why you fell for the geeks! It was because I was a geek! Which I had learned from our uncle first hand.

I remember you being fussy with food, the curly head of hair, the big innocent eyes-oh god- heart wrenching, and you were always a skinny little thing. You always said the cutest things, and the most absurd dreams, oh pig although I never told you then... you were always my best friend. The whole time... even when you were hurt, and they called me from class to go take care of you, I acted resentful, but when I saw you I thought- aww that's my sister (I didn't know the word "aww" back then though) I need to hug her if at all anything. I remember I would just hug you. Heck the whole school thought you were so cute though, they would all tell me how cute you were! Maybe I was a little jealous, but hey I got to tell you stories at night from the upper bunk, and share adventures with you on the weekends!

We were scolded together, and then we grew up and played politics and got each other in trouble. All in all I'm glad we've grown and aren't playing those games, but I do miss the imaginary games we played. Sometimes I think I described things to you as I saw it in my head, and only you know what worlds are in my head! You are my best friend, you are my secret keeper, my sister, my angel, (also ma's angel), my play time friend, my motivator, and inspiration. Thank you for the talk we had the other day, I really needed it.

You always protected me; once we were walking through new market and some guy did what any ingrate low-life would do: brush against my body. And you asked me: did that guy just touch you inappropriately? I confirmed your suspicion, and you were enraged and said no - one touches my sis like that. You grabbed the guy and asked him - aren't you ashamed? don't you have a mother, or sister? you should be ashamed of yourself. You tried to cause a scene, but as we know Calcutta did not and does not care what happens to its women. You were and are my hero pig! Thank you for being there, for standing up for me, and having major balls! I love you!

Pig there's so much I still want to talk to you about, sometimes I wish we could go back and be innocent again and play, and make mud laddos, but we can only travel in our hearts, to relive those moments, revel in the nostalgia. However I want to make new memories and spend more time with you... but time flies so quickly now... Those 100 day summer vacations are gone, they flew by! I know sometimes it seems I don't make enough effort to be there for you... but if I could I'd be there with you making tents out of blankets on a rainy monsoon afternoon, so we could play monster - monster. Or I would be there for you when you called, but grown up life is so different... did we ever imagine this? You've found your prince, and will soon be wed... I never imagined that! I never imagined you being the New Yorker, and me the New Yorker, loving midwest suburbia!

To more adventures and journeys together!

I love you little sister and hope to see more of you!

Backpacking Love

I love this place, I love this man,
The sun I love, and even the sand...
From atop the dunes we survey the beach,
The bald eagle flies just out of reach,
High we sit, and watch the sparkling lake,
Leaving only footprints, only pictures we take...
We own no land, nor the skies,
But today this is ours, fleeting moments, as the eagle flies.
We do have each others' love and trust,
For us, right now, that is enough.

My Blog Space

Lately, with all the whining and negativity in the world, one tends to seek a place of comfort, a serenity, a safe place... Sometimes even the social networking sites are full of well crap. So I come to my safe place... my blog. I can share here, without feeling judged. I can cultivate my positivity, courage, and passion. I don't have to hear the whining, problems, cursing of others. I actually pledged to myself to not post negative/ complaint-y / whiny stuff anymore.

Curbing one's attitude, emotions, approach, perspective, to something positive over negative, can turn your day around. Just believing in yourself, helps create positive opportunities that will present themselves to you. It takes that small act of changing. Sometimes its tough, but once you make it a habit, it will be your approach in every situation.

Although this is not a real place, its my safe space. It beings out the goodness, the light in me, and helps me shine it everywhere (sure, call me a hippie, I don't mind). Do try it though, when you are feeling down, low, blue, sad, negative, frustrated... take a few deeps breaths close your eyes, and go to YOUR safe/happy place. See how it helps you. It's almost like a gratitude list (which helps us focus on the things we are grateful for during bad days), except this is your place, your space.

:-)

This is my safe, positive space to learn, grow and share... what's yours?

Bits of Wisdom: Accept Yourself

Today my sister sent me a text, and how fitting it was. For the last few days I had been struggling with my self image, body, and needing to love myself... my near and dear ones gave me a few words of comfort, but it did not hit the spot until she sent me this timely text:

"We perceive a very distorted view of ourselves. It's like looking into a cracked glass with many cracked pieces. When we accept that everyone we look up to, envy, love, wish we could be like, etc., are those tiny pieces of cracked mirror reflecting something that exists already in YOU, the Mirror will join the larger whole to uncrack and flatten to show the real you, which is all encompassing, infinite and ultra dynamic" - Piyali Banerjie

I asked her why she texted me this, and this is strangely what I had needed to be reminded of. It's like she read my mind.

She replied:
Hi ded,
I was meditating on the train and suddenly that entire visual and understanding came in…and I found so much peace. and then suddenly I had the urge to text it to you so I did.
love you
She is wise beyond her years, and our bond runs deep...

Chanting to Raise Your Vibrations

Ram Dass explains that chanting in Sanskrit is important; the language was created during a time of evolving consciousness, so the sounds produced through Sanskrit opens chakras and channels within your body in the energetically level. Hence, I feel that since one decides to use mantra in daily practice they should go all the way with learning pronunciation and chanting in a way that serves the purpose of opening Chakras and balancing the body, mind, and purify the Athman.

A Marathon and a Bachelorette Party!

Lucky to attend my first ever bachelorette party and Marathon in the same day. I was nervous at first, but it was so much fun, because we were a great bunch and kept it classy!

The Marathon was the River Bank Run in Grand Rapids, and the Bride to Be and her two sisters ran the 10K (6 Miles). They averaged a 7 minute mile and it was a breeze for these super fit girls, that they sang the "Eye of the tiger" the whole time, changing the words of course.

Then since we couldn't find a way out of the city, we watched the 26K which the girls were pumped to do next year. We watched for a long while, until we were pressed for time to get to the Bridal Shower, which was followed by a few hours of rest and then the Bachelorette party. Making it a busy, fun and love filled weekend. What awesome energy!

Chai and Biscuits

The cream that holds the two biscuits together was what we craved for as a children. We even loved just eating the frosting off a cake. Grown ups would be happy with their chaa and Britannia-Marie Gold biscuits, the cake part of the cake without frosting, and read a fat book on philosophy in the corner of a room, or under the tree.

We needed the sugar, the running around, and occasionally swallowing up an Enid Blyton or other fictional book whole, along with cookies. We didn't understand how as we grow tastes change and we refine our tastes in food and books alike. Where is that marie-gold biscuit now, I wish to dip it in my tea.

That day will never come, when I say no to Oreos or Bourbon biscuit (Britannia). I still like biscuits with cream fillings, but I have learned the pleasures of Britannia-Marie with my chaa or earl grey. I do enjoy sipping my wine slowly now, rather than gulping it down like a boisterous college kid. It took a while to get here, but sometimes I still do and did enjoy the childish craves for sweets, and the college binge drinking. Mellowing out as an adult, does give space for the subtle pleasure of life, sometimes even childish, like laying on the grass reading a book on a warm sunny day and observing a lady bug for hours.

Now I finally get it! Why the grown ups love having chai and marie biscuit on the balcony on the morning, reading the newspaper, or just chatting over chaa. Its a simple pleasure and lovely way to start the morning. I would do that, and do the crossword puzzle at the back now, if I was there. Some kids would come and wonder 'why are the grown us eating marie-biscuit, when they could buy the cream filled wafer biscuit? Lets go storm the cookie cupboard!' I'll go on sipping my chaa, dipping my biscuit, hoping it doesn't fall in, and carry on with the crossword. Now I get it.

From running around playing "police-and-robber", to college parties, to meditation and yoga... life has its medley, some stay on in one stage others move and grow. It's nice to revisit stages every now and then, but growing into the butterfly is most exciting!

Life with My Dad

it's a mourning dove sitting on my parent's deck... yes we know the christmas lights are still up, but it looks pretty in the summer too!

A Good Year - A Good Meal

I look out the window and see these birds cuddling... (there were two, one flew away). I pointed out this "nature's joy" to my dad.

Me: look there are two mourning doves!
Dad: ooh I see. We called them Ghughu Pakhi, when we were kids, in rural Bengal. Ghughu because they make the ghurghur sound.
Me: Oh.
Dad: Yeah when we would see one, my uncle would take out the gun and shoot them.
Me: What!? Why?
Dad: it was good meet, very little but enough for the family.

Astounding!

Texting With Parents Massage / Message

Dad texts me, after I taught my mom and dad some yoga from what I had learnt at my teachers' training. Especially a potent relaxing technique using massage, in Savasana (dead body pose).

Dad: I really enjoyed your message - it relieved pain, relieved body stress and helped relax. Maybe 15 more minutes would  have been just perfect. Love you - your Baba.

Me: Massage*

The next day, my dad and i leave work for lunch break:

Dad: so you like your old father to drive you around, ah oh well you did give me a M-A-S-S-A-G-E

Me: If you want, I can drive!

Dad: Well but you always M-E-S-S-A-G-E during lunch break! We can't have driving and massaging at the same time!

Me: What?

Allergy Season

Me: Are you sick? I Think you are sick, it's not allergies. I don't want to catch a cold from you, go home!

Dad: No I'm just acting!

Me: For what purpose especially you won't go home and play hookie

Dad: What is that?

Patterns

"We hurt the ones we love the most"
Its a saying we always hear,
When we are sad, angry or in some difficulty
We lash out at the ones nearest
They are also the dearest.
By doing so we drive them away
In turn, they hurt someone else nearest
and dearest.

The pain continues
The hate increases
The egos engorge
The tears break.

They will cry alone
You will die alone
Cold and miserable
All because you wanted to be right.

They will appologize
You will stand up with pride
Assert your ego
You were always right!

They shake their head in sorrow
For you will never know tomorrow
You were blinded by ego
To see the simple beauty of a sparrow.

Don't be that person
Don't be the jerk
Tell your ego you're done with hurt
Let it go! Let it go! Let it go!

It's ok to love selflessly
It's ok to love unconditionally
Everyone loves a team player
No one likes the prideful selfish achiever.

When you are hurt or angry
When you are sad and lonely
Remember love
To love yourself first and everyone else.

So Fight back with love
Heal with time and patience
Confront with understanding
Calm the ego altogether.

Ruin the pattern
Break the cycle
Kill the ego
Meditate on being.
Breathe!
