Thank you to...

... All my readers in USA, India, Germany, Russia, UK, England, Canada, Italy, France, Brazil, Australia, Sweden, Ukraine, Mexico... Did I miss out any countries? Apparently Romania, Nepal and Switzerland just joined the list of readers! (Updated Feb 2nd 2013)

Every time I see my stats page (Google has an awesome stats page for blogger), I am thrilled to see the places where people are reading my blog from. I hope people from more places read it! I would totally love more feedback! What would you like to read about? :-P

Hello friends from all over the world!
Love this picture of the earth. It always fascinated me...

Life with Dad

1.

Dad and I are driving back to work from lunch break. We are waiting behind a car at the traffic light as the light turns from red to green.

Me: Why isn't that person moving their car yet? (since the car took more than 10 seconds to step on it).

Dad: Firstly it's a lady. Secondly, you have to always respect the ladies when they are at a stop light, because they have to do so many things there. Like brush hair, put on lipstick, put on the make up...

Me: WHAT!

2.

Dad has been having tooth problems and has been going to see the dentist a lot. He and the dental surgeon had a long conversation about the technical and mechanical aspects of the mouth. From one doctor to another type of doctor; they seemed to comprehend each other in the language of science. On the way home my dad comments:

Dad: God has made such a big design error. He needs to rectify this. There should be a recall.

Me: What are you talking about? You are supposed to respect God! No?

Dad: Yes I do, but doesn't mean he did not make a design error! Firstly the way the teeth are place in the bone... to the whole reason teeth don't last a whole life! (He goes into a technical banter about how the human dental design is so flawed).

Me:<confused face>

Dad: I demand a recall. Poor design. (shakes head in disappointment).

Breathe and brush teeth twice a day!

Master Cleanse - Day 3

Last night was the hardest night. I wanted a nice big juicy burger so bad. I resisted.
Now I begin day 3!
Also I am proud to say I didn't check facebook for two days! I feel free.

I never knew fasting was sooooooooooo amazing. Infact I wish I had done it more. I feel my head is clearer,  and I am more connected with my body. Going into meditation is easier, I don't know how, but it is easier to relax and empty oneself. How is this possible? I think it's because one of the biggest things that drive us - Hunger, is what we are training to ignore, so it is easier to ignore everything else, as a result. That's just my theory.

I feel more connected with humanity and less attached to material things. In example I know what hunger means, and just struggling and wishing I could eat, but not food (I cleared out my house of most junk foods). Hunger is maybe the first sensation babies feel... its what makes us human, makes us want to survive. I think that's what makes me feel so connected. Yet the ability to say no I don't need it, I will meditate, makes me realize if I can do without food everyday (and live off just water and the air we breathe), then do we really need all the other stuff we want and want and want in life?

I realized that this culture of abundance, plentiful and large portions has trained us to feel hungry more often, want foods we do not need. Also it creates tremendous waste, waste which only a few see. If the waste was placed in front of our eyes day after day, we would do something about it. Right? But we often just through our trash in a can, flush the toilet and never see the accumulation of our waste. It's a lot. Then there are people everywhere, all over the world, hungry, thirsty, homeless... and WHAT will you whine about today?

Do I need that big juicy burger? Right now a crumb would satiate me, or even a leaf of lettuce.
But really the water washes my hunger and stress away. It cleanses me internally, mentally, emotionally.

The Master Cleanse - Day 1

For more information go here.

This was something that I decided to do last week, and I said to myself it was now or never.
So I had an all lentil diet all weekend, some cereal, the last super consisted of salmon, lentil soup, and hot chocolate. Next day I began with green tea, vegetable puree, and then I had to start the cleanse lemonade at night or else I was gonna crack.
Being hungry can put you in quite the feisty mood.
More aware and awakened within my own body. Rest was more restful and awake is more alive.
I did some yoga, and my muscles feel it. I did sit ups too, and its all very different from when ON food.

Things to do before the cleanse:

1- Research fasting, the cleanse, talk to a doctor if you have serious medical conditions.
2- Find the right time to begin, for example don't begin before thanksgiving or other such times when eating is required.
3- Remember to start drinking the lemonade early in the morning and about 8 or more cups a day
4- Make the lemonade fresh every time
5- Make sure you poop everyday
6- Don't listen to negative people who say fasting is bad. Do your own research, otherwise you will end up giving into the psycho-social and emotional pressures
7- Remember you need 10 days!
8- Remember to make enough lemonade if you go out.
9- Remember to ease in to it 3-4 days and ease out of it 3-4 days
10- Meditation and Yoga, supportive friends help so much!

Most of all do it for you. Do it right.

Recipe for Master Cleanse Lemonade
(Makes ONE, 32 oz Nalgene Bottle)

2 Lemons
1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper
30 oz Purified Water
3 oz  grade B maple syrup

Fill the Nalgene bottle up to the 30 oz mark. Squeeze the lemons to make 6 tablespoons of lemonade (3 oz). I have learnt to squeeze well, and squeeze the most out of the lemons. Great arm exercise. Add the lemon juice in. Then measure and add the 3 oz (6 tbs) grade B maple syrup. Add the Cayenne pepper in, as much or as little as you like. Close the bottle and shake shake shake! Shake shake shake! Shake your bottle! Shake your bottle. Now drink and enjoy fasting!

The Social Networking Drug

Remember NOMOPHOBIA?

Well I am using this post as as my unofficial  FBA meeting (Facebookaholics Anonymous), I am admitting to overdosing, being addicted to and abusing FB to the point that my life is at risk - career, writing, mental health etc. Yes I admit. We all have addictions, examine your life closely.

Anyway I tried just lessening the use of, monitoring myself, but then my phone would show me I had comments! Or I would stalk the "frenemy" (The friend who is not a friend but an enemy). My writing was becoming into trolling around FB for information... whatever it was unhealthy, now I am stopping it. When i get back maybe I'll delete a bunch of people I keep around for good grief knows what! It's just not healthy. I know some people who are addicted to twitter, constantly twitter updating, or the text-a-holics, there are workaholics, adrenalin junkies... (maybe some of these are better than the rest of the addictions out there, but don't fool yourself, it IS unhealthy too).

Balance.

The Middle Path.

That is the keyword for all these addictions, if you can not balance, then eliminate it entirely.
I think I can learn to balance eventually. For now I am going into my own rehab and just letting go of Facebook. May I be more productive. May I live more. May I be more present.

Love.

How many of us waste time on this? How many of us are addicted? Sure it helped the Jasmine revolution etc. but I suffer... do you?
So many people... so many people... so many lives... so much information...

The Religion Competition

Awesome news! The Shiva Trilogy final book is being released on Feb 27th!

(Please read this disclaimer, for I found it very similar to what I would disclaim in general regarding my blog. Thanks! And please note this blog is a thought process in dynamic progress, please check back for edits! Once again this is not to dis anyone, any religion, language or culture. This is just my rambling flowing thoughts and NOT a scientific document. I enjoy reading books.)

For those of you who don't know what the Shiva Trilogy is about, here are a few pointers:
1- The Shiva Trilogy consists of three books: The Immortals of Meluha, The Secret of the Nagas, and The Oath of the Vayaputras
2-These books are based on "Hindu Mythology", from the perspective what if it wasn't myth but it all really happened.
3- Hinduism is a religion followed in India. It dates back to circa. 2600 BC! Yeah it's pretty effing old.
4- Shiva, known as the God of destruction is the protagonist of the story, and it follows his life, trials, love, and leadership.

There are a lot of misconceptions regarding Hinduism, especially because it is such an ancient religion. In fact me thinks, most Indians/ Hindus have no true idea about Hinduism. It is honestly a lot of reading since there are so many different ancient texts (kind of like in Judaism). Recently I began studying my heritage, my culture etc. out of curiosity, and found out numerous things which I had no idea of before. It was not even taught in my undergrad Eastern Religions or Hinduism class (I happened to major in both Psych and Religious studies). I keep reading more about the Vedas and the Gita, having studied the Gita unwillingly as a child, it was interesting to reread it as an adult. Not everything I read about Hinduism sat well with me. Some books said that women must be subservient to men... Guess how I feel about that!  I am yet to find a "perfect religion". And you know what this is why there are so many wars, because everyone thinks their religion is perfect because they do feel so truly about "their" God, Gods, etc. The thing is... it is so hard for people in general to believe, maybe all of the religions are perfect, and perfectly flawed, and I will respect them all, but by doing so this does not hurt my faith in my God.

My adventures through religions, my childhood witnessing of too many "killing in the name of" such and such God/ religion/ prophet/ religious leader, and my cognitive dissonance with certain beliefs of certain religions was enough to put me off all religions and distance myself from it. Instead, I found myself in a very spiritual place, call it new age, hippie-ism, atheism, agnosticism, whatever else you may want to call it - I don't care, where I believe in a higher power (no sex is defined, if it has to be She will be like me), I keep my morals and values, I use my brain and heart, I love and forgive, I respect other people's beliefs, I respect all religions, I try to remember the whole meaning of "Namaste". I'm glad that some of the Western world is slowly studying the history behind Hinduism and Eastern religions and finding true value in it. Yet just because they value it or respect it, or practice parts of it, doesn't mean that they are converting, it's life we adopt, we change! The East learns things from the West.

It seems the general attitude toward Eastern Religions especially Hinduism they are often looked down upon, considered less real, or generally inferior to Abrahamic Religions. Hinduism seems to get hit the worst because it is taught to be and thought to be a polytheistic religion when in fact ONE true God (Brahman) is the force behind all the other "Avatars". It's always dismissed as a religion based on myths rather than true events, unlike the Abrahamic religions, which claim to be more truer because they have more proof, their writings are more recent, monotheistic religions are more believable? There are many other reasons, in fact the Bible says so in many different verses etc. etc. etc. They always have MORE proof.  However the Bible which most people read from is but a translation and interpretation of the mystical words of the olden days saints scholars what have you, which is same as in Hinduism, Buddhism etc. Whatever! I find all the religious texts highly unbelievable when it comes to truth factors, however they are all nice stories and good guides for people who seek more meaning in their life or something.

What I like about the Shiva Trilogy is it takes the ancient texts of the Vedas etc., and puts them into what I like to call a "Christian" thought process, of let's not think of it as mythology, let's interpret this as if Shiva was really a man. Come on Moses parted the Red Sea and he's only known as a prophet and not God; Jesus turned water into wine and he's only known as the son of God; Prophet Mohammad heard the voice of God and wrote an amazing book, and he's known as a Prophet, not God. With the same premise, let's say there was a strong, hunky, unbreakable guy named Shiva, and he did some major feats as a leader in his time. People looked up to him so much, they equated him to Mahadev (God of Gods), but he was truly just a king. However history, turned this literal, thus making it seem such a man was impossible to have existed. So many stories were interpreted wrong, quite possible. Ganesh was not possible because which man has a head of an elephant? This man does: The Elephant Man. Deformities were something which at the time inexplicable, had to be understood in some way... Ganesh, a good man, with severe deformities, became an angel sent unto earth: We can learn to love those who do not necessarily look like us! All the different colored dirties - Lakshmi - Yellow - Chinese? Saraswati - White - Russian? Krishna - Blue - African? Etc.

Or How about ALIENS! I like the Ancient Aliens (History Channel), version of who are the Hindu Gods or Gods in general maybe. It is a scientific explanation of some sort. It theorizes that maybe Ganesh was a time traveler from the future who they thought was a God! Or perhaps he is an alien thus the different form. Hehehe! (An article which I found very interesting during my research). The fact remains though that sadly at the end of the day such a weapon such as religion can be used for bad or good, or for controlling people. Please be wary of this. In the end we do live in a world where one can believe in anything in the Universe they wish to, from something as whimsical as Unicorns, to God in whatever religious sense, to even conspiracy theories regarding governments. Some may try to find proof others may follow unquestioningly.

Truly, most humans need someone telling them what to do. Very few can just live as is. At work, school and play. Humans also enjoy control over certain things, and need explanations for things they can not understand. We look for meaning in our lives, meaning which we need someone else, or something else like an ancient text which was written through some acclaimed ancient dude who heard it from God or some dude of God's which makes the meaning of our lives totally legit!

Honestly, I am so open to all thought processes, as long as people keep holding the following attitudes "My God is more true than yours", or "My religion is superior and truer than yours", I will be unable to accept than any of them are true. In fact I cry that all of this leads to war, war and more war... terrorism, fighting for land, politics, and worse dirty politics... all in the name of what. Really what? In the end it is all ego... Get over it! Go do some yoga and live and let live! And Stop fighting - You know who you are... just stop war and fighting! In the name of Jesus, Allah, Shiva, Moses, etc. etc. etc. I know you didn't start the fire, it was always burning since the world's been turning, but YOU can stop it! For the love of the Gods or God!

And definitely read The Shiva Trilogy, if just for entertainment... it is the next Lord of the Rings! <3

Fitness Goals - Week 4

Doing Yoga on every weekday now! And I feel like my body is more sculpted, toned, but definitely more aware, and flexible. Also been eating lentils daily, wish really flushes me out (if you know what I mean!). It is great to be in tune with my body again. However I did sign up for a 'Yoga for Climbers' class which focuses on muscles, stretching, healing and building. It is a mixture of a flow, balancing, and relaxation.

We start off slow, and then go into Surya Namaskar (sun salutation). Then we do variations of warriors, twists and some of the balancing poses. Of course my favorite pose is Savasana, the lights go dim, soothing music playing in the background, and pass out! However this gives me the kick to get on with my weekly workouts. I want to see improvements in ME!

The weekly visits to the Chiropractor have been awesome, along with the yoga. Also I may soon be able to climb again! I am still on the elliptical however, but pushing the heart rate a little above 150. I also took a chance and began running on the treadmill for 5 minutes only, however my chiropractor advised me against it. :-P

Yoga is definitely great, and so is eating healthy. As apple a day, lentil soup, avoiding carbs and starch, and focusing on proteins. :-)

check out my blog on how to make healthy lentil soup.

Recipe for Healthy Lentil Soup

Healthy Lentil Soup:

1/3 cup lentils (Urud, Toor, or Green Moong dahl)
2 and 1/2 cups water
1/2 an Onion
1/2 a large carrot or 4-6 baby carrots
1 small tomato or half a medium/ large tomato
1 tsp Cumin
1 tsp rosemary
1 tsp salt
1 tsp chilli powder
1 tsp any other herb you would like to taste :-P I added chia seeds one day!

Wash the lentils well (use the saucepan you will cook it in), rinse, and drain water 2-3 times. It is OK if a little extra water remains. Chop up the onions and tomatoes into small cubes. Cut the carrots lengthwise and small. Put the pot on stove, add the 2.5 cups of water and set to medium heat. Add everything - veggies all cut up, and all the spices,  into the saucepan the lentil is in. When is starts boiling lower it down and put the lid on, with a little room for the steam to escape. Boil it for 20-25 minutes checking on it and stirring it every 5-8 minutes. This is enough for one person/ one bowl.

Meaningful Snail Mail

2013 hmm... Facebook... hmm... Social networking... emails... friendships....

Checking my inbox and I see spam. Checking my mailbox I see spam fliers! Once upon a time I would get letters from friends, and then later when times changed, I did receive actual emails from friends. Recently this has become very rare. I mostly use email for work, or for buying stuff. When was the last time a friend sent you a long meaningful email? My sis and I have a gratitude email we send out each day. Everyone adds a short list of what they are grateful for that moment, that day. It keeps us focused on the positive.

Another thing I do is, I try to spark some meaningful emails among few friends, but with texting, facebook, twitter, whatsapp, email, etc. etc. No meaningful interactions are really made, or it is more rare. This just saddens me because I love meaningful conversations, I love good laughs with friends near and far. I treat each day like not a moment has past since we last met. Sometimes I get a reply, sometimes a few follow up emails... but then it dies down from one-side or the other.

This year many of my friends listed "keeping in touch with friends, better/ more often" as their new year's resolution. Does this mean you touch base with them once a year? Twice a year? Quarterly? Monthly? Weekly? I'm not saying we must all have a meaningful dialogue every second... but truly what IS the meaning of life without good friends to connect or re-connect with? I will be crude here: you are doing the same shit on a different day, day after day, whether it is work, partying, drinking, gym-ing, reading, watching t.v., doing hobbies... Or maybe you do not seek meaning in life. :-P Maybe you are already connected with friends in a meaningful way and in that case this isn't for you.

I have a dear friend here in Ohio. We live 20-30 minutes apart, however work, schedules, and sometimes weather keep us from hanging out. When we do hang out, it is deep, connecting, bonding time. We are honest with each other when we cancel plans; whether it is low on cash, or 'Hey i am sorry i double booked, please forgive me! but I planned with Becky before you' or 'something else came up' or 'I'm going to blow off our yoga time cause the guy I had a crush on finally asked me out!' or 'I just don't feel like driving', or 'I really just don't feel like it, can we reschedule?'. Being honest works, because you are being honest to yourself and to your friend. It brings you closer, plus friends are understanding and supportive of each other. Most of us can tell when a friend is being flaky, or when their excuse is really a "white lie" covering up for their 'I just don't feel like it'. Honesty increases respect for each other. try it sometimes! My point was that although being in the same state, neighboring cities, should not be an excuse for not hanging out. Same thing, don't forget to try to give your friend a call, or shoot them an email, or reply to their text. Sometimes life happens, it can get in the way, but like my friend and I, we make it a point to hang out, and make things we do together memorable, meaningful and most of all a type of fun we both enjoy! I wish we did it more often.

So, when you make that new years resolution to keep in touch with your friends, set some goals out, just like you would do if you were going to lose weight by eating healthy and working out more. Take this as serious. Who are your good friends? Who are friends that consider you a good friend but you haven't given them a shot at friendship, maybe try this time? How often will you keep in touch? Method of communication which is good for both of you? What are the new major developments in the person's life to keep track of? Remember to pace yourself because you can get stretched too thin.

Honestly, being a good friend comes naturally to some, but not to all. I noticed when reconnecting with friends they had significant others, husbands/wives/partners, and some even have children now! It's hard to keep track of names. So I try to remember by writing their names down together. I feel bad when I call a dear friend and I say "oh and how's the husband?" I want to be able to say their names. I don't know about some of you, but I do take friendship seriously.

Another facebook trend is a status message that says - 'this year I am practicing giving (or something to that effect), and the first 5 to comment on my status will receive something from me. Now please post this on your wall.' Last year I started writing letters to people I hadn't talked to in a long while. I reflected on our friendship, and wrote to them short notes, a card, a drawing, a long letter... It was one of the tasks to be done in the book/ course 'The Artist's Way'. So a bunch of people got letters, some replied, some emailed, some texted or called. I actually did not expect anything! However remember getting a letter in the mail from a friend? It's better than getting something from Amazon in the mail. It's a part of your friend, but on paper, just for you... written from the heart.

Now we type emails, it's faster, but how many do we really put effort into? Is the heart of your email inbox empty? Is it craving meaningful connection?

Let's catch up!

Hey, it's that girl Mindy!

I always have a hard time finding role models, or characters I relate to/ identify with in popular culture. I do not really like the Bollywood idea of what Indian girl's are like: either too princessy, arrogant, nakka (Bengali for -  a  person displaying the following behaviors whinny, naive or affected, cute but annoying crankiness/ whine/talk), cutesy,  yet some how all of them are these skinny sexy beasts, who can sing and dance. Yeah, not true! Most of them can dance, but most can't sing. Kinda like Hollywood actresses!

Anyway back to Mindy!
Mindy, she's Indian, half bong (slang term for Bengali, not the marijuana smoking device), the other half being Tamilian, stars in The Mindy Project. She has been a writer, producer, director and creator of The Mindy project, several episodes of The Office, and other works. In grad school someone told me I was like "Mindy", at the time I had only seen her in one episode of the office. I did not want to be like the character she played!

People here usually want to try to relate to immigrants in someway, usually it's "oh you're Indian? I have an Indian doctor!". Sometimes it becomes "oh you are Indian! I just love Slumdog Millionaire!", or "Oh you are Indian? I watch The Office and you look like Mindy Kaling!" It's ok, passive racism, or whatever, they are trying to make some sort of effort. I guess I think all Asians are geeky and goofy like Misuka in Dexter :-P Or all Americans are like Honey boo boo! I'm just trying to relate back at you! Anyway I began watching Mindy because I wanted to support my fellow Indian - American who supposedly resembles me. I fell in love.

In "The Mindy Project" she acts as Dr. Mindy Lahiri an Ob/Gyn, who works at a private practice, which she run's with two male Ob/Gyns. She's got her career in order, but her love life, she being a Indian, slightly chubby single woman in her 30s, is something I relate to entirely. She makes light of the situation, dealing with being Indian in America, Women's health, being Indian and parents, and what's expected etc. In last night's episode  Mindy wants to randomly hook up with a guy, because she has not been successful in securing a healthy relationship with a guy, the last few guys were douche bags. Now casual hook ups, and sex in general is such a taboo subject in the land of India, which spat out the Kamasutra apparently. However casual hook ups are condoned in a city like New York, amongst women my age. She tries, but it ends up turning into a major mess up, and she ends up saying that although nothing happened, it's totally respectable in other parts of the world that nothing happened. Also in the episode she made a comment that she would love to be played by Frieda Pinto if a movie was made of her life, in the case that she was murdered on her "date".

Mindy really paints out the life of a working woman in her 30s, of any ethnicity, has a curvy body, dark skin, (not the usual skinny/ sexy/ hot girls), but is still considered attractive, and the dating, love, life... All your friends are married but you are still figuring it out. The "nice guys" you date turn out to be cheating jerks. Your co-workers are helpful yet crazy in their own ways. The world has changed, women have changed, and the youth is forever changing, and dealing with it all! I'd say this pretty much sums up life today and now!

There are some holistic/midwife practitioners that pose as competition to Mindy and her colleagues' practice. I think some things said on the show regarding these subjects, may have put off some viewers who practice those holistic forms of medicine/ or the midwives. The fact is that just like religion these forms are still yet to be scientifically proven, and though home delivery with midwives has been done throughout the ages, all across the world, there are complications which modern medicine can handle. I've faced this recently when dealing with issues of my uterus. Over the course of 6 months I have now seen 4 Ob/Gyn's and one general physician. It is so hard to find a good Ob/Gyn that listens to you, takes you seriously and understands that your body is unique. Some of the previous Ob/Gyns advised me not to go to my chiropractor for treatment saying it's all a sham. One of the Ob/Gyns told me "don't have unprotected sex with your boyfriend of two years, you can't trust him until you are married." WHAT! So husbands can be trusted, however an adult, healthy, mature relationship is not trust worthy? I've seen married couples who are swingers, who are unfaithful, who are messes! I just thought this doc was nuts to tell me that. Another doc told me after prescribing me on a very heavy dose of estrogen, that that was the only medication for me, and if I thought the side effects were bad, then there was no hope for me, surgery was the next best thing.

After much searching and suffering, pain, meds, life altering decisions I found a good doctor, but I told her I would like to seek out natural options as well. She was open to it, and said she was there for me, and it was my body (only after doing the 5th pelvic exam of the year! Oh my word!). Anyway, my point is that, yes doctors are like football players - overpaid, only know the strategy of their own team, and their only their position - subject/ specialty. So for instance, some of these docs didn't even know the options in their own field. It's not their fault if they do not know the holistic options out there. On the show, they make fun of the Hot Stone therapy, aromatherapy etc. However they show Mindy slowly opening up, trying the Hot Stone Therapy, doing yoga or crunches maybe! I don't even know if women know the different options out there for them, in fact, it is much like how people are ignorant about other religions, cultures, and races. (This rant is due to reading negative reviews regarding how Mindy and her colleagues dissed the male-midwives!). Done with this i promise! Besides it's a comedy!

I am usually very picky about comedy, but Mindy seriously tickles my fancy! She is witty, sharp, and fresh, even my boyfriend enjoys it when he watches it with me. My mom liked it, but could not stand Mindy's voice. I didn't like it either, but she isn't skinny either, and we all like to see skinny, sexy women on television... except now since I gained 40 lbs thanks to the estrogen overload (freaking Ob/Gyns!) I can totally relate to women and our changing bodies!! This comes back to the fact that women judge women harshly... I thought about why this was, and it was because we are so insecure, we feel bringing other women down, lifts us up.So off topic again, but I could be judging Mindy for being an Indian woman in her 30s acting on tv and being so uncouth and chubby, and politically incorrect in whatever way, so liberal! However I find joy that she is like me, representing me somewhat, and I totally support the show! It's like one of the few things Fox has gotten right! I love shows that have women in strong lead roles, and Mindy is definitely a strong, hard working, confident women, who sometimes says or does crazy things!!! (Which woman doesn't or hasn't at least once!).

Breathe
Mindy and her two male Ob/Gyns colleagues... they are cute!
She does quirky things for instance when on call during nights at the hospital, she wears a mask in case a serial killer walks in to kill her... he'll realize she's a killer and walk away! Logic! I would kind of employ this same tactic!
This literally is me when the doctor weighs me!
I'd totally go see her if she was a real Ob/Gyn!
As smart as she is as a Ob/Gyn doc, she is as silly and dreamy when it comes to love, relationships and romance! Happens to the best and smartest of us!
I guess she had a rough night.
Ryan! this might explain why I do the vulture neck while talking/ arguing! She's kinda doing it too! Is it an Indian thing? i dunno! But am so glad I'm not the only one! Ryan said sometimes when I drink, and talk at parties, this is what becomes of my posture. :-P

This was me at some aerobic class, zumba? jazzercise? Whatever I think Mindy's at a Bollywood class, and she's as lost as I was! Really women how do you do it? Even after five classes I'm like WHAT! I can do ballroom dancing (standard and Latin) and belly-dancing fine!
Though, sometimes Mindy might bring out her moves, and some wicked tunes
They are all stunned after hearing some news ... Def watch the show!

Imagining an Immigrant

I'm a third generation American, of Indian origin.
My maternal grandparents came here years ago. My grandfather began the immigration process... he was rather like the "Bilbo" of the family. Actually, very much like Bilbo indeed.
My father came here to pursue his PhD at Case Western Reserve University, and he was super successful, married my mom, and they consequently had me and my sister... (for more of my family's story please go HERE).

I didn't really know what it was like to immigrate to America, although we did immigrate to India. So we sort of "went back to where we belong", and it was nice, but we did not belong because our passports said "Born in USA", we had different accents, and we were just "different". I always wonder though what it would be like to go to the USA for the first time as an adult. I wonder what it was like for my grandfather, my father, other friends of mine who have immigrated from India and other countries... what was it like for them? Here's what I think it was like for a couple from rural India, who got a job in USA, and have to move there.

"This is a life changing opportunity", he thought to himself. "I'm so nervous and excited! Anxious and thrilled! is it possible to feel this all at the same time?" Hareesh thought this as he stared at the computer screen in the cyber cafe. He had just received an email from his new employer that they had secured an apartment for him, and his tickets would be booked from the closest international airport. He would have to book his and his wife's train tickets from Erode, Tamil Nadu to Chennai, then a plane to Mumbai. This would be his first time traveling to a different country. A whole new world. A whole new life. What would it be like? The only things he knew was from the media - books, television, news, and some words from friends who had moved there. Hareesh set off to tell his wife that the date of the move had been settled.

He got on his mo-ped (scooter) and drove the dusty road about a kilometer to his home. He excitedly told his wife the good news, his parents were there too. They were happy but they cried, tears of joy, and tears of nervousness of the future. His parents would be left alone, with his sister living nearby with her in-laws, he would be earning less than he was earning now in Rupees. Why? Why risk lower pay and travel far away? This was a dream come true though. A step up - the land of opportunity. They all took a second to go pray to the lord Ganesha.
"It's only two and a half weekends away! We have to pack and be ready!" Hareesh told his wife and family. "I will go immediately and book the train tickets now, the office will just be opening. Will you come with me too, Rohini?" She agreed, and they both set out.

Once they had the tickets, they decided to go shopping for some new clothes, maybe even western wear. It would be cold there, as the president of the company had told them. So they set out to find a place to buy sweaters in this tropical climate city. They each bought 2 sweaters and a jacket. They would be traveling to Cleveland, Ohio. They had no idea what was in store for them.

They were packed and read a week before the trip, just adding small things to the suitcase. They had two check in suitcases, two hand small hand luggage each. The took clothes, books, hair oils, etc. Apparently everything could be bought in USA, but what about medications etc. So all of the essentials were packed. They waited eagerly for the day of the trip. They stayed at home and spent time with the family as they would be missed most. Plus no knowing when they would return to visit. The future was full of unknowns... exciting but scary. Great opportunities lay ahead, however of course the great disasters also came to mind, but no one spoke of it. They prayed and talked about the best, focused on the positive side of such an experience.

The day came, and they said their goodbyes, tearful for Rohini, but Hareesh maintained a strong frame, though his heart quivered in sadness of leaving his parents and excitement of this new adventure. Going to Chennai was not such a big deal, for he had been to Bangalore, and passed through Delhi previously, but going to USA, was the true adventure. A tear escaped his eye, he wiped it away quickly before anyone could see. This was his dream come true, everything he worked so hard for: it was finally happening.

He took his parents blessings and got into the rental ambassador car to the train station. There they found their coach, and put their suitcases in with the hired help of a Coolie. They settled into their seats. Their journey to the "new world" had begun.

In Chennai they took a taxi-cab to the airport. They had to wait 6 hours before their flight to Mumbai. The company had booked the flight with an airline company that flew only out of Mumbai. This was his wife's first time flying and she was not so keen on it. Hareesh told her she had the 2 hour flight to Mumbai to get used to it, because after that it would be a 14 hour flight to Newark Airport, and then another hour long flight to Ohio. This was a tedious long and tiring, but the only way to get to their dreams, a better life, success!

Hareesh and Rohini went through the check-in process, security check etc. and found themselves on the plane learning how to fasten their seat-belts. Hareesh turned of his Nokia phone of 8 years. He would use it one more time in Mumbai to call his parents. Rohini began crying as the plane lifted off, and Hareesh consoled her saying "Silly girl, we are still in India. You should cry when we leave Mumbai!" Some food was served and they soon reached Mumbai. They stayed in a hotel near the airport until their flight the next evening. They dared not go far for they didn't want to miss the flight. They kept all their tickets, passports, and other papers ready for the trip as it grew towards evening the next day. They both had a little tummy problems due to the nerves as the time grew nearer, but dared not admit it.

They checked-in again, the line was very long, and many foreigners were there too. Rohini stared. She asked Hareesh "Which one of them is a movie star? I always hear that people see movie stars in the airport." Hareesh laughed and said, "These are all common people like you and I. Just because they are flyign doesn't mean they are movie stars." He realized his wife was so simple, and cute. He hugged her with his free arm. When they were finally on their seats in the plane, an Indian stewardess came and gave them blankets and asked them if they would have vegetarian or non-vegetarian food for their dinner. They were vegetarians. After the flight took off, Rohini cried looking out the window and the lights of Mumbai, and India vanish into the darkness. Dinner was soon served, and the inflight programs began. They watched a few Hindi movies, and slept.

The flight was long, and soon they were awoken with bright lights. There was an hour to landing, and they had to fill out some forms. Hareesh began filling the forms. They were customs and immigration forms. A stewardess who was American - Caucasian, asked them if they would like breakfast. She offered them Sausages or Bacon. Hareesh looked at Rohini, and he said "We are vegetarian. Is Bacon vegetarian?" The stewardess beckoned for the Indian stewardess, after trying to explain that bacon and sausage were the only options, and both were made of pork, but failed at being clear. The Indian stewardess explained this to them and said they should not eat the meat, but eat the bread, and yogurt instead.

They soon saw the city of New York below them. It looked different from most of the movies, since the twin towers were there no more, however seeing Statue of Liberty and the Empire state building was just as exciting to them. This was the first sight of USA! They soon landed in Newark airport. Their flight to Cleveland, was in an hour and a half. They rushed through customs and immigrations, and looked for their next departure gate in this huge airport, filled with so many people, rushing past them. Everyone seemed so tall. All dressed in long warm woolen coats, as this was January and cold.

The couple happened upon a window, and looked out, it was WHITE! This was their first time seeing snow in real life. They were exhausted but looked at the snow in wonder for a few minutes, then had to go to find their gate. It was at the end of Terminal A, which was a long walk from Terminal C, where they had landed. By this time they were about ready to crash, they didn't have any dollars on him, because the company said they would pick him up from the airport in Cleveland. They couldn't or wouldn't dare to even buy a coffee, or some food. They waited, boarded, and flew up. This plane offered them juice and some crackers, which they ate up quickly.

They landed in Cleveland, and an employee from the company who was also visually Indian, picked them up and drove them to their apartment. The person was named Shawn, he had a strong American accent. He explained to them, he would let them drop of their luggage, and they would go with him to buy furniture and such for their apartment. The apartment had nothing in it. Rohini fell asleep in the back seat, Hareesh talked with Shawn. "What kind of name is Shawn for an Indian guy?" He thought, but he realized there was a lot to be done rather than think about such silly things. As Shawn explained to him, he needed to get furniture, and he would have to slowly pay the company back. They would have to open a bank account for him, driver's license, social security number, lots of paper work, and then eventually put the apartment lease into his name. Hareesh was exhausted by just the thought, plus the travel, jet-lag, and all this overwhelmed him. But this is what he had wanted! "One day at a time", he told himself. "Slow but steady, wins the race. And this is not even a race!"

"You're lucky this is Friday, and you have the whole weekend to work through this. After the furniture store, we will stop by at the office, and you can meet the president. He wants to talk to you and see that you are settled in. A few of us will help you through the weekend. Someone will carpool with you to work till you get your car. Bad news is you have to be at work on Monday at 8am!" Said Shawn in his American accent. Hareesh just thought it was weird that an Indian man spoke like this, but he got used to it.

"I will work, this is what I came here for!" Said Hareesh. Then he thought to himself, "actually maybe work will be the only familiar thing in this unfamiliar land. Chemistry is the same everywhere in the world!"

How far we all have come...

It's raining in Northeast Ohio this morning... and 50*f ... I'll keep the warm temps but 86 the rain

Dad- Its raining really hard, don't you have an umbrella? I always have an umbrella.
Me- no! I just run!
Dad- Every lady has an umbrella! You are not a full lady yet!
Me- What?? I never heard of such a rule!!
Dad- how will i get into the building without getting wet?
Me- stop being a girl, and RUN!

I get out and run to the door. My perfectly structured curls are ruined, but I got minimally wet! Dad giggles as he runs!!!!

Do I see an umbrella in the future?

Yoga Diaries

Yesterday I went to my first yoga class since 1997. This class brought back so many memories. From 1991 to 1997 my sister and I went to Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center in Kotturpuram, Madras, which later moved to Thiruvanmayur or a little further from there. My sis and I were children, and we were in the children's beginners class, in a year or so we were in the advanced classes, teacher training classes, then back to the advanced classes. We went everyday, and later 2-3 times a week as we grew older. The Yogis became a part of our lives, the center became a part of our lives, although reluctantly at first, it was sure, especially the Center in Kotturpuram.

My mother told my sis and I she was going to enroll us in classes and took us to the yoga center. We were sitting there to sign up in this lobby which has a plant, a few pictures of the Swami Sivananda and Swami Vishnudevananda, and a very large OM. I remember wondering what that meant, I was 6! I had no idea what yoga was, although I heard my mom say she did it. While we were sitting there, a lady also waiting there, suddenly began talking to my mom "Oh Aruna! I didn't recognize you. Remember we met at the Gupta's dinner 2 months ago? Anyway how are you doing? I didn't know you had kids! How are you? Are you married too? I knew you looked familiar..." She went on and on before my mom could even correct her mistake. She mistook my mom for someone else. Finally my mom said, "I am not who you think I am!" The lady apologized and felt so embarrassed, I felt her embarrassment! It was funny but also strange. We were in a strange place, signing up to do something strange,  and this stranger lady begins talking to my mom!

We signed up for the classes, and my mom bought us t-shirts and a book for the class. My sis got a yellow shirt which had a big Om on it. It had the motto of the Sivananda Center:

"Health is wealth, Peace of mind is happiness, Yoga shows the way."

-Swami Vishnudevananda
I got a blue t-shirt identical to my sister's. So we proceeded to the class which was upstairs on the thatch covered terrace. There was this interesting picture of the spine, and postures, and a small changing room. We used bamboo mats to do the yoga on. No fancy pansy, rubber mats we have now a days. This was yoga the original way. We were asked to bring a cloth - not a towel or rug. It was minimal props. We got our mats and sat down on them. We met our instructor: Yogi Sabu-ji. They were all  real yogis here - never married, living the yogic way, eating that way too - pure vegetarians etc. There was one more modern teacher, we called him Swami-Ji and he had been married, but left his family to live a life of a Yogi. They were very serious and would scold us if we misbehaved, talked too much, did not pay attention. We made friends with other students, and friends with the yogis over the course of the year.

The first class we learn the Surya Namaskar. We did that for a few classes, till we knew it, by heart. Then we learn other poses, and our first upside down pose - shoulder-stand! Sarvangasana! Yeah! We kids loved being upside down for some reason. We also had to learn all the Sanskrit terminology. As the year went by we learnt more poses/ asanas, and got closer. At some point my sister and I were the only students, yoga was not popular hobby in general in India. I think we enjoyed doing yoga outside, and on the rare occasion play games with the Yogis, attending the special events, ie. Swami Vishnudevananda visited the Chennai center in 1992 or so. It was amazing to chant, meditate, sing and eat with him. We really had no idea he was a senior and learned yogi. We just knew he was aged, to be respected, and this was a super serious day.
We didn't know at the time how much Yoga was benefiting us, and how it would become such a huge trend in the west. We just went because our mom sent us there to get better from out asthmatic and sinus conditions. With regular practice we got sick less. However I am ever grateful to my mom for sending us everyday!

I will have to wait for more memories of  yoga class to come back to me... however I never stopped doing yoga after 1997. This was some magical skill we had acquired, while most girls finished their Arangetram in Bharatnatyam, my sis and I were skilled yogis - we could stand on our heads, our hands, and become "crazy human pretzels". We practiced it at least once a week with our mom, and we would enjoy showing guests the power of yoga!

The One Heart Way

If you read my previous blog about what happened to me, you must have wondered, so what did she do after that? How did she go on? There would be many questions.

First off- I told someone, and that someone helped me find help. Especially since, abuse leads a women to lose self respect, looks for self-deprecation. This is because of all things the woman blames herself, and self worth plummets. She believes she deserves this abuse, and unknowingly seeks out more abuse. It is hard to break the cycle. I think once we identify victims of childhood molestation, abuse, and rape, we must intervene with confidence boosting therapy/ help to break the cycle. I was lucky to have a few great mentors/counselors along the way. Unlearn being the victim, and focus on building the self once again.

Second - I refused to ever feel helpless like that again. I promised myself I would never get "drunk" with anyone I do not utterly trust. So, honestly, I get drunk only if i am home, with my parents, or with my boyfriend (who would have had to earn my trust). Also I always make sure there is a designated driver (drinking and driving is so dangerous, please always have a DD).If I am ever at a club again I will always buy my drink from the bartender and watch him make my drink. Never accepting drinks from any guy I don't know, anymore. If you don't drink alcohol, good for you, but remember, roofies/other "date-rape" drugs, could be mixed with your non-alcoholic beverages too, so beware.

After my sister's incident, she and I both began learning Kwanmukan Karate. However as children we both  learnt basic self defense from Shihan Hussaini. This was my first introduction to Isshin-ryu Karate. Then I picked it up again in 2007 here. I practice it non-competitively since I do this for me. My Sensei is slowly teaching me how to spar. Isshin-ryu means a lot to me, because my Sensei not only taught us how to defend ourselves, but the history of Karate, discipline, helping out in the Dojo, being good to ourselves, becoming fit, reminding us to drink water, it is more than fighting...It's the meaning behind it all.  A meaning, a code that must not be taken lightly. The philosophy is the base of all forms of martial arts, including this form of karate, which stem from various regions of the East, for Isshin-ryu, it stems from the Ryu-Kyu Islands of Okinawa (Japan), are truly eye opening- simple but profound (like most eastern philosophy). Isshin-ryu stands for - The One Heart Way (literal), but meaning - the way of the one heart.. the story goes on to say we all have one beating heart. So I will fight you if I must, but the choice is yours. Although I may have mace, or some sort of self-defense tool, I now have my empty hands, for they are learned in "the way". I maybe no black belt, but the first rule is ... avoid conflict at all costs, run! I talk to my Sensei about this and many scenarios, and he is very strong, so I always think its the best way to practice.

Third - Always be alert when walking in an unknown place, or at night. Don't let your guard down even if it is in your own neighborhood (see Kitty Genovese). Be ready, be alert, remember what you could use to defend yourself.

Fourth - working on "ME" has helped mend me, my confidence, self esteem and my heart and soul. I learned to be more conscious, and give love, forgive, and let the light flow. I think this healing came from my sister, who has a crazier story than mine. Thought younger, she has learned so much in such a short time. She is my hero. Find a way to heal, spiritually. It is very important, for the spirit is what is ripped open, no matter what happens to the body. (I honestly wish I could refer my sister to people who need this help, she does have an awesome organization called Conscious Culture). Meditation, art, writing, music, yoga, dance... are all creative outlets to

I am glad though I can take care of myself, and I now know that "No means No". I know what sexual harassment is, and I let people know when they have crossed the threshold. I am glad I grew out of my drinking-partying-clubbing stage, and have grown up to be interested in a different type of night life (camping, star gazing...). However I never forget the things I learned, especially since I travel to different places.

I also never forget to breathe...

2013: Resolution Smesolution

I asked Ryan what his resolution was a few years ago, and he said he didn't make promises he could not keep. That's pretty much what a resolution was. Most people make a promise to themselves to stop eating desserts, work out more, quit smoking etc., and inevitably most people end up breaking their resolutions. So I totally saw his logic. Honestly who am I fooling? It sounds so virtuous and it does make for great conversation at a New Years Eve party, but it really takes more work than that. I don't remember a year that I actually practiced my New Year's Resolution for the whole year. So this year I thought for a long time about what last year meant and what will be different this year.

My goals in regards to health, and career are what will be my main focus this year. I will work out more, watch what I eat, learn to cook healthier meals. I will be mentally, emotionally, socially, and spiritually more CONSCIOUS! I will pursue music, photography and drawing. I will learn Chinese. I will get back in shape to do all the things I love to do by May. Blog more... last year I wrote 65 blogs! i love blogging, i love your feedback! Keep it coming!
Career wise, I will write more, focus on my book, other writing projects, maybe start something on my own... I don't know what this year holds, but I will be open to all options at this point. I am so excited, opportunities abound!!

That's it right there! Those are my goals for this year. Keep it simple, make it a part of me...
I don't want to go into detail, but I am sure it will unfold on here as the month's go by!

Until then I am grateful for my lovely family, my amazingly talented best friend and boyfriend Ryan, my wonderful loving friends, my work, whatever health I do have, and ...

Breathe!

Yeah, I drew/calligraphy-ed/ wrote this!
